About
Us:
LAS PALMAS DE MAMRÉ
is a Christian mission serving the people living in the remote jungles
along the Costa Rican/Nicaraguan border. Its headquarters is located
on the Sarapiquí River, two hours by boat from Puerto Viejo
in Sarapiquí County, Costa Rica.
Founded
in 1990 by Missionary Ana Moshenek, Las Palmas de Mamré is
a part of the interdenominational Costa Rican Foundation, which
was formed that same year. Baptists, Mennonites, Methodists, Lutherans,
Pentecostals, Episcopalians, and people from numerous other denominations
are actively involved in various aspects of the ministry. Several
churches also provide financial and ministerial support to the Mission.
Las Palmas de Mamré attends to both spiritual and physical
needs of the river people who live and travel along the river “roads.”
Many of these people are Nicaraguan refugees who are survivors of
the terror of recent civil wars in their country. The many small
pueblos along these rivers are farming communities where the villagers
survive on whatever the land can provide. Here there are no roads.
The only modes of transportation are horses and boats. Many of the
area residents only have small dugout canoes.
